Samsung's kids tablet takes away nasty net dangers

THE concept of young children sitting in front of a tablet for hours doesn't thrill me - especially when you think of what they could stumble across on the internet.

But if a tablet becomes a fun learning device, it's could be just as beneficial as reading a book or playing a good educational game - as long as it is not for hours on end, of course.

That's where Samsung's Galaxy Tab 3 Kids  comes in.

It's a device specifically made to cater for different age groups, which importantly, can also be used by adults through its dual user mode settings.

The brightly coloured seven inch tablet, complete with its own child-proof rubber casing, looks to be aimed at a very young market.

So I didn't think the nine-year-old, who is into super heroes, would want to play.

But some of the apps are so good they sucked him in.

Pettson's Inventions 1 and 2 offers dozens activities where you help Pettson and Findus build their clever inventions by figuring out which objects should be included and where they go in the machinery.

I struggled at times, but my bright young son excelled.

TOCA Hair Salon 2 is hilarious as you create new hair styles and looks for your 'model' victims.

You can grow hair instantly, colour it, cut it, straighten it and make it curly.

Kids Planet Discovery tests youngsters' knowledge of geography with fun games and graphic to promote hours of play and learning.

Other pre-loaded apps include TOCA Train, Creative Corner, Dolphin Readers and Story Cloud. There are also  pre-loaded e-books.

Your kids can download their own apps  through an app service called Kids Store which features content designed to enhance early learning for children three years and older.

The GALAXY Tab 3 Kids has been launched with accessories, including a Kid Grip Cover and an interactive C Pen, which is sold separately.

A time management feature allows parents to set specific time limits.

Once you've wrestled the device off your child, you can switch it back to standard mode to surf the web, watch video clips or movies, write emails, and do what you normally do on a tablet.

It may look like a toy but unfortunately it doesn't come with a kids' price. It has a  RRP of $299 while the carrying case and stylus will set you back another $70.

That make its quite expensive for what it is, and certainly there are cheaper alternatives on the market, which can also be loaded with kid friendly and time management apps. Alternatives include Freetime on Kindle Fire HD and Google's Nexus devices.
