Aussie sailors making waves ahead of next Olympics

AUSTRALIA'S sailors were the stars of the 2012 London Olympics, bringing back three of the seven gold medals won by our athletes.

And a repeat could be on the cards at next year's Games with our team winning two gold medals and a bronze from the six classes contested at a test event at the Olympic venue in Rio.

Cousins Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin beat world champions Billy Besson and Marie Riou from France to claim gold in the Nacra 17 class, and world No.1 crew Mat Belcher and Will Ryan also edged out a French pair to win gold in the men's 470 class.

Belcher (pictured), who joined Malcolm Page to win gold in London, said: "There's a lot of work to do, but we're pretty happy with how we're going."

Tom Burton was the other medallist at the test event, taking bronze in the Laser class which was won by fellow Aussie Tom Slingsby in London.
