High-speed rail project short listed by government

The Federal Government has short listed the construction of a high-speed train that will more than half the time it takes passengers to travel between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.

The North Coast Connect will cut the current two hour travel time to just 45 minutes.

If the train link is approved it will provide a rail line between Brisbane and Maroochydore for the first time.

The State Coalition is looking to the Federal Government to fund the 200km fast rail track project through its $10 billion national rail program.

The bid was one of 26 rail projects submitted for three infrastructures or business cases that the Commonwealth will consider funding.

Lion and tiger attack horse in circus trick gone wrong

This is the shocking moment a lion and tiger attacked a horse after a circus riding stunt went horribly wrong during rehearsals.

The animals and their trainers were rehearsing a routine for a show in Cangzhou City, in China's northern Hebei Province, when disaster struck.

The plan was for the lion and tiger to ride on the back of the white horse, which had a small platform strapped to its back in place of a saddle.

But the footage from the Chinese "Taiyang" Circus begins with a lion mauling the horse in full view of staff.

"The animals didn't co-operate too well," the spokesman said.

He added: "The horse kicked the lion, which began biting it in return."

To make matters worse the tiger, which was also in the ring at the time, joined the attack.

It begins gnawing at the horse's legs as it desperately tries to gallop away to safety.

The distressing footage shows the horse desperately going in circles around the caged ring as both the lion and the tiger cling to its body.

Circus staff used whips to drive the two big cats away, the video shows.

Miraculously, the panicking horse was left bleeding and injured, but survived the ordeal.

Aussies arrested in $500m drug sting

Three Australians have been arrested in Serbia accused of being part of an international drug-smuggling ring.

The police alleged in a statement issued on Wednesday that the men "are linked to" the discovery of 1280 kilograms of cocaine that was seized last April on a Chinese boat docked in Sydney, Australia.

The drugs were estimated to be worth $500 million.

Police released footage of the arrests that took place in the lobby of a hotel in Belgrade, Serbia.

A bag filled with large amounts of various foreign currency banknotes was shown, and police said the arrests were made during a "money handover".

Girls charged over bashing of disabled teen

Three teenagers have been charged after allegedly bashing and torturing a 17-year-old disabled girl in Victoria.

The three girls, two aged 15 and one aged 12, allegedly lured the teen to a local picnic in Moe by pretending to be her boyfriend.

They filmed the horrific two and a half-hour attack, in which the 17-year-old was forced to inhale glass from the smashed screen on her iPhone, had her hands burnt on a barbecue and her head repeatedly smashed into a wooden table.

Footage of the attack, which took place in the early hours of Monday morning, was later shared to Facebook.

The teen was taken to hospital, with the victims mother telling Ten News that her daughter was "unrecognisable".

"The amount of times they pummeled her head into that picnic table is disgusting. Her face is so black and blue she is unrecognisable ... she can't get her glasses on because her cheekbones are so swollen up," she said.

Detective Senior Sergeant Michael Thek said that it is "one of the worst assaults they've seen in some 30 or so years here".

The attackers have all been charged with robbery and assault.

The 12-year-old girl was released on bail while the two other teenagers have been remanded in custody.

They are due to appear in the Children's Court at a later date.
