Rural fire brigade elects area's new group officer

THE Rural Fire Brigade has elected a new group officer for the Stanthorpe area at an annual general meeting on Tuesday night.

Pedro Curr from the Ballandean Rural Fire Brigade has taken over the role from Roni Bau, who has stepped down after holding the position for six years.

"I'm looking forward to doing my job and hope I can carry on Roni's good work,” Mr Curr said.

"Hopefully I can do what he's done over the years and keep it going smoothly.”

Prior to this role, Mr Curr was the deputy group officer for the Stanthorpe area for 12 months as well as the fire warden for Ballandean.

Mr Curr has been a volunteer with the Rural Fire Brigade in Ballandean for nearly 30 years.

He said he felt joining the brigade was a way he could give back to the Ballandean community where he has lived his whole life.

In the new role, Mr Curr hopes to make sure all the local brigades stay up to scratch.

"It's mainly just getting out talking to brigades and the public and keeping them engaged with dry conditions and what to expect in bushfire season.”

Along with a new group officer for Stanthorpe, the Rural Fire Brigade also elected other new officials.

Ray Palmer will fill MrCurr's role as deputy group officer, David Entermann will be the administrator and James Massey will stay on as treasurer.

Mr Curr will be in the group officer position for the next two years.
