Run the gauntlet

NO matter what corner of the region you're travelling to, a man (or woman) with a big red stop sign is certain to get in your way.

Heavy road works between Warwick, Toowoomba, Brisbane and Stanthorpe meant motorists experienced delays when they hit the roads this week - and a Department of Transport and Mains Roads spokesman said there was still plenty to come.

He said work being carried out on sections of the New England Highway between Dalveen and Applethorpe, was expected to be finished within three weeks.

Motorists experienced delays of about 20 minutes waiting at up to three stop/go points at some times.

"Routine maintenance works are under way between Stanthorpe and Wallangarra," he said.

"Motorists are advised to expect changed traffic conditions including reduced speed limits and stop/go traffic control.

"There are minor works under way between Warwick and Toowoomba under stop/go conditions with reduced speed limits causing delays."

Cunningham's Gap delays of up to 20 minutes are expected to continue.

Southern Downs Regional Council Engineering Services director Peter See told the Daily News the council was trying to be more proactive about letting the public know what to expect on the roads around the region.

"We will be having a meeting every week or two weeks," he said.

The Daily News did ask for specific areas under stop/go conditions in Warwick at the moment but was only given general information about where works were under way.

A council spokeswoman said there would be traffic control conditions including revised speed limits and in some cases stop/go conditions in various places.

She said emergency repairs on roads affected by heavy recent storms in Goomburra, Maryvale, Emu Vale and Swanfels were taking place.
