Rudd garners support but Coalition retains stranglehold

DESPITE support returning for Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, a swing of three percentage points still leaves the government behind the Coalition's election-winning lead.

The latest Newspoll, conducted at the weekend, showed voter support for Mr Rudd rose in the past week.

But the swing back to Labor did not change the 47% primary vote support for the Opposition - an election-winning margin of 10%.

It also confirmed the steady 9% of primary support for The Greens, while support for independents and "others" fell three points to 7%.

The poll also confirmed a one percent rise in voter satisfaction for both Mr Rudd and Tony Abbott, sitting on 36% and 42% of voters satisfied with their performance, respectively.

While the Newspoll had the Coalition in a winning position, the Essential poll had both major parties on 50:50 ground in the two-party preferred.

Essential's Peter Lewis said while it did show a stronger position for Labor, an interesting swing in the Essential poll was a three-point rise in support for The Greens.

"I think you can read too much into polls, but to date I think a lot of voters have not found a huge amount of inspiration from either major party," he said.

"It shows in the rise for The Greens, but more telling is the fall for both major parties' primary vote."

The Essential poll put The Greens on 11% of the national primary, with the Coalition leading on 43%, down one percent on last week, and Labor on 38%, down 2%.

While Mr Rudd may have risen in some voters' esteem, betting markets have moved Labor's odds of winning to a record-high $10.

Odds from Sportingbet Australia show Labor currently has less than a 10% chance of beating the Coalition, with the Opposition's odds shortening to just $1.05 on Monday.

Punters also backed the Coalition to win between 91 to 100 lower house seats, at $2.40, while others put the odds on the Opposition to win between 81 and 90 seats at $2.10.
