WARWICK could become a roundabout capital - if only we had enough capital to pay for them.
Councillor Ross Bartley brought up the issue of busy Rose City intersections at the general meeting this week, suggesting the traffic slowers were a way to fix the issue - but as always the topic of dollars soon arose.
Cr Bartley said he felt compelled to discuss the problem at the meeting because a few people had approached him about it - with the insections at Wantley and Grafton Sts and Guy and Pratten Sts the main concerns.
"If it is just one you might not worry about it, but when it's two or three it becomes a common thread," Cr Bartley said.
He said "it would appear" the council was in favour of putting in more roundabouts, but the problem was budget contraints.
Engineering Services director Peter See confirmed the intesctions of Wantley and Grafton Sts and Guy and Pratten Sts had come up before.
"There has been talk of these in the capital program over the years but the projects have not gotten into a budget," Mr See said.
He said the council could get traffic data from the police to find out how many accidents had occured at the various intersections to try to locate hot spots.
Councillor Neil Meiklejohn pointed out there had been a number of smaller accidents, and asked how serious the accidents needed to be before something happened with the instections.
"Do we have to wait for a major accident?" Cr Meiklejohn said.
Deputy Mayor Peter Blundell said he advocated the use of roundabouts, especially since he had lived in Wantley St, but thought there were other ways to achieve safer intersections.
"Can we look at line markings?" he asked.
"There is a lack of clarity of the carriageways and the lanes, so I would suggest line markings initially but I would support roundabouts if that didn't work."
Cr Bartley said Grafton St had become used by more and more motorists who were leaving Rose City Shoppingworld and were trying to avoid driving along Wood St.
"It's a very busy place and I want a report done on one for the Wantley and Grafton insection," he said.
Mr See said there was no resolution at the meeting because the issue was brought up in general business without notice.
