Rockhampton man muscles up for fitness mission
HE'S won a gold medal in Australian surf lifesaving and a Sunstate Australian Championship boxing title but now Matt McLeod is looking to prove himself in another sport.
The Rockhampton man is excelling in CrossFit and hopes to use a local fitness competition as preparation before attempting to quality for regionals next year.
The Elite Fitness League event, which is on at CQUniversity today, is a locally-organised competition that gives athletes an opportunity to "train with purpose".
EFL spokesperson Robert Black said more and more elite athletes were using some kind of CrossFit workout as part of their training.
"As far as fitness goes, it's one of the best foundation sports for building endurance and strength," he said.
"It's taken off everywhere."
It seems CQ is no exception, with at least four 'boxes' just in Rockhampton and Yeppoon.
And tomorrow competitors are travelling from as far away as Gladstone, Clermont and Mackay to compete in the EFL.
Rob said it was competitions like these that showed how special the culture of the sport was.
"When competitors finish a WOD, they go and encourage other athletes to complete it," he said.
Rob also praised Matt's efforts in the sport and his dedication in training.
"He's obviously a gifted athlete to be able to translate that (surf lifesaving) to boxing," he said.
The first EFL was held last month and two more are planned for the future.
