Warwick team plays at Roar match
A TEAM of 12 under-8 footballers from Warwick talked all week about their game on the big stage before playing on the hallowed turf at Clive Berghofer Stadium on Friday night.
Coach Glenn O'Brien said the Warwick players weren't disappointed after playing Wanderers from Toowoomba at halftime in the game between Queensland Roar and Melbourne Heart.
“It was the first time a football team from Warwick played during a major match,” O'Brien said.
“The 11 boys and one girl in the team were all excited about the game.
“They were even getting pumped up by Toowoomba Raiders ladies players who were in the crowd.
“A couple of our players got autographs at the game and met some of the A League players.”
The result didn't matter but the score was 1-all as Warwick and Wanderers played on a quarter field on Friday night.
Four games took place at halftime involving five teams from Toowoomba and teams from Warwick, Stanthorpe and Dalby.
Away from their own game, the Warwick players were excited to see their team, Queensland Roar, score a 2-0 victory against Melbourne Heart.
For most of the Warwick players, 2010 is their third season of football.
“This is the first year we are playing on a whole field in club fixtures,” O'Brien said.
“One Warwick official told me he was hoping we could have a team play in a halftime game at a major fixture each season.”
The Warwick Football Association organised a bus from Warwick to the game.
With many parents, families and fans travelling by car, more than 100 from the Warwick association were at the match.
The chance to play at Clive Berghofer Stadium was even more exciting for the team when the Roar/Heart game was played during the FIFA World Cup.
O'Brien said there was no doubt who the favourite players of the Warwick team were, Australian star Harry Kewell and Argentina number 10 Lionel Messi.
Junior footballers have two weekends off from fixtures due to the school holidays. Warwick hosts a carnival on August 1.
