Rider hopes to Ace at rodeo
BARREL RACING: After a two-year hiatus, the Granite Belt's Sally Cameron is jumping back on the horse.
She'll be competing in this year's Stanthorpe Rodeo in the barrel racing event with her horse Attard's Black Oak, also known as Ace.
The mother of two has been riding horses since before she can remember.
Her father competed in rodeo and her pop was a stockman, and it looks like the love has passed down to her two-year-old daughter Matilda, who has already started riding.
Cameron started competing in rodeo when she was 10, something that took her all the way to Canada when she was 14.
"I went over with my mum and dad. Dad competed in saddle bronc riding,” she said.
"He just wanted to go over and see what the rodeo life was like.”
She's ridden throughout northern New South Wales and southern Queensland, but this weekend will be her first time in the new Stanthorpe rodeo arena.
Cameron doesn't have any champion trophies yet, but in her time she has competed in five national titles for junior barrel racing.
She's still getting used to her new horse so isn't expecting a big win at their Stanthorpe debut, but is still excited to get out on the course.
"This will only be our third barrel race,” Cameron said.
"I've had him for three years and had two pregnancies between that.
"It's more to get him out there and having a look.”
As much as Cameron has a love for horses, it's the rodeo community she's most excited for.
"The people that you meet and the social aspect of it is really great.”
