Ricciardo in driver's seat as Red Bull waits for call
MOTORSPORT: Red Bull are happy to wait for Daniel Ricciardo to decide his Formula One future, hoping the Australian driver will stick with the team beyond the end of his current contract.
Ricciardo will be in the final season of a five-year deal next year and has been linked to Mercedes and Ferrari but Red Bull team boss Christian Horner is keen for the Australia to remain alongside Dutch teammate Max Verstappen, who has a long-term contract.
"The next move he makes at 28 years of age is a very important one for him. So of course I'm sure he's going to take the time to make sure the decision is right for him,” Horner said.
"But he knows the intent very clearly, and I've discussed it with him, is that we want him in the team. If that takes another six months, then so be it.”
Ricciardo is currently fourth in the championship standings having notched one win and eight other podium placings this season while Verstappen, who won the Mexican Grand Prix on Sunday, is sixth.
If Ricciardo does opt to quit Red Bull after 2018, Spaniard Carlos Sainz is expected to slip into the vacant driver's seat.
