UPDATE 2.45pm: WHEN the wife of a 57-year-old South Golden Beach surfer heard sirens this morning, she raced to the nearby beach to check her husband was okay.

What she was confronted with was every woman's worst nightmare.

Tweed Byron police Inspector Mick Dempsey said the woman found a man and a woman performing CPR on her husband's lifeless body.

Insp Dempsey said the man's body was found by another man at 8.45am.

A NSW Ambulance spokesman said paramedics were called to Gloria St at South Golden Beach at 8.45am following reports a man had been found washed up on the beach.

Insp Demspey said the man initially spotted the man's surfboard, which he was still attached to by his legrope.

"There was a man and a woman trying to resuscitate him for some time until police arrived," he said.

When paramedics arrived they took over CPR from the man and woman, who had been attempting to revive the surfer for about 30 minutes.

Insp Dempsey said there were no signs of injury on the man's body and his death was not suspicious.

A report on the man's death will be prepared for the coroner.
