Rental scheme finally kicks into gear to help low earners

THE National Rental Affordability Scheme is gaining momentum in Gladstone, providing low-to-medium income earners with some rental relief.

Only one house had been available in Gladstone under the scheme in the past two years.

"It was quite minimal in the early stages. We had some setbacks in regard to development and construction time frames," Anglicare Gladstone housing co-ordinator Val Radloff said.

"We're now starting to come online from now until mid-next year. We're looking at getting 15 or so properties in the Calliope area and half-a-dozen in Gladstone at the end of the year."

Despite the slowing rental market, Ms Radloff said rents were still high.

The NRAS provides housing at 20% below the market value.

"It's providing affordable housing for workers on moderate incomes," Ms Radloff said.

"The ones that have been forced out of the rental market with the industrial boom over the years."

At present a Calliope four-bedroom house rents for about $460 a week, but through the scheme it is about $344.

Similarly, a three-bedroom duplex in Gladstone rents for about $470, but is about $359 through the scheme.

Anglicare is the appointed tenancy manager and Ms Radloff said as more properties became available, they had to get the word out and fill them.

"It will be quite beneficial for workers across the Gladstone region," Ms Radloff said.

"All the news about the firies and police coming to town who can't get anywhere to rent, this fills that niche."
