Ravenshoe: biggest burns victim airlift in Qld history

THE emergency airlift of six burns victims to Brisbane in the wake of Tuesday's far north cafe explosion is the biggest aeromedical operation of its kind in Queensland history, the state's health department has said.

Queensland Health said four further patients are expected to be transferred from Cairns to specialist Brisbane burns units throughout Wednesday, after they were severely injured in a freak gas explosion at the Serves You Right cafe shortly after midday.

It follows the transfers of a 37-year-old woman, the owner of the cafe, who reportedly suffered burns to 80 per cent of her body, and a 59-year-old woman who also suffered critical burns on Tuesday night.

A paramedic who treated the victims, Atherton officer in charge Terry Cumming, said he had never witnessed such a confronting scene.

"Everyone suffered some sort of burns - facial, hands, neck. With the explosions there were some people whose clothes were all blown off, ripped off their body," he said.
