Quest to stay by mum's bedside
WHEN Warwick woman Luwana Cubby found out her mother Donna had a brain tumour, she wanted to be by her side as much as possible.
Soon after the diagnosis, Luwana quit her job at a Warwick daycare centre, so she could spend quality time with her mother and help her in her steps towards recovery.
Although Donna, a former Rose City resident, has been given an optimistic prognosis, she faces a long road to recovery.
She has had two brain surgeries over the past couple of months and is due to have another in May.
Luwana said she and her sisters have had to make sacrifices to be at the hospital to support their mother during these difficult times.
"It really gets her down when no one is there and us being there for her keeps her strong and happy," she said.
But regular trips to the Gold Coast Hospital and accommodation costs have become a financial burden to Luwana.
There is no free or subsidised accommodation for the families of patients, with the meals, travel and hotel costs quickly adding up.
