Punters race in for Cup fun
IF you wandered down Palmerin Street about 1.45pm yesterday, you would have only shared the quiet street with the odd tumbleweed.
While the streets of Warwick were deserted, the TAB, Warwick RSL, Bryson’s Place and the Warwick Golf Club among others were a flurry of pink and yellow betting tickets and Melbourne Cup shenanigans.
Cup punters Will West and Lucas Gillott couldn’t resist the lure of the amber ale coupled with gallopers at the Warwick RSL.
“It’s just a good day for a beer and yarn with mates,” Mr Gillott said.
Perched in the Melbourne Cup stand was the training legend whose eyebrows would make a wise old barn owl jealous but Bart Cummings wasn’t the one who took Melbourne Cup glory in 2009.
Warwick Turf Club president Garry Adcock said he backed Alcopop but did not collect.
“I didn’t win on that race but I did win on the day,” Mr Adcock laughed. “I gave Shocking a strong chance so it wasn’t a surprise he won.”
