Punch On scores a hit for local stud

A FORMER Raheen Stud filly flew to first place in her age category at the prestigious Magic Millions at the weekend, sparking a successful five-day sale for the local stud.

Raheen Stud manager Basil Nolan said the win for the three-year-old, Punch On, was a "huge result" for them.

"We sold her about two years ago at the QTIS sale at the Gold Coast when she was a yearling," he said.

"That really helped with a lot of people coming to look and buy our horses off us from then on.

"Our horses are having a good run - we've now had three winners, including a winner of a $1m race."

Mr Nolan took down 14 horses - eight colts and six fillies - and sold an impressive 13 of them.

He said they went to homes around Australia and overseas.

"A couple have gone to Melbourne, one went to South Africa, then others went to Sydney, Brisbane and stayed on the Gold Coast," he said.

"Magic Millions is obviously the main and the biggest sale for the year, but other sales are important because we're selling a big number of horses."

About 900 yearlings were shown in the Magic Millions, and Mr Nolan said a large chunk came from Darling Downs studs.

While sales were strong for some studs, there were reports that the number of international buyers was down this year.

He said they had been attending the sale since its conception.

"We went to the first one 25 years ago and we've been at them ever since," he said.

"There's a range of studs from around Australia that attend."

Raheen Stud will take four yearlings to a sale in Adelaide in two months time, after which they will take 40 yearlings back down to the Gold Coast for the QTIS sale in March.

Mr Nolan continued his celebrations last night and will return to Warwick from the Gold Coast today.

Other local studs Canning Downs and Lyndhurst Stud also waved the local flag at the popular sale.
