Pringle Cottage undergoes makeover

ONE of Warwick's oldest buildings will be the first local recipient of the Warwick Credit Union Foundation.

The entrance and grounds of Pringle Cottage, a sandstone cottage dating back to 1870, will be transformed via the Warwick Credit Union Foundation, established last year to assist community groups with funding innovative capital projects.

The Pringle Cottage Project will re-define the entrance to museum and emporium in Dragon Street and will feature sandstone, a heritage rose garden, pergolas, sitting areas and most notably, one of the original front gates and more than 60 pickets which have been fastidiously restored from the National Bank of Australia.

Warwick and District Historical Society president Janice Flood said she was excited about the changes afoot for Pringle Cottage.

“The whole area will be beautiful,” Mrs Flood said.

“There will be a lovely pergola with banksia roses and other flowering roses, sandstone pillars – it will just draw you in.

“People won't be just visiting for all of the artefacts, they will be able to sample the old-world ambience.”

Former president of the society Elva Sinclair is excited about how the project will link with other historical features in and around Warwick.

“Its means a new profile, the garden will tie in the sandstone buildings on the Heritage Trail with Warwick's famous roses,” she said.

Work has already begun on the project and it is planned to be established by next year's 150th birthday celebrations for Warwick.

Funding from the Warwick Credit Union Foundation is eligible towards the areas of: Arts, culture and heritage, sport and recreation (where the activity benefits the whole community), education and the environment. The 2010 round of funding will open later this year.
