Cattle set for tough competition

SHOW time is not just about the rides and carnival games, it also means its time for some tough competition for the big animals.

The prime cattle competition is back at the Warwick Show this Friday and is promising to be even bigger and better than last year.

Entries for the competition have closed with numbers reaching 105 head, said chief steward Bill Gross.

"That number is up on last year which is very pleasing to see considering the current market means a lot of farmers have been selling."

With more than $2000 in cash and prizes to be won Mr Gross said the competition will be impressive.

"The quality of cattle in this area is very good at the moment," he said.

"We have entrants coming from the local district and from as far as Gatton."

According to Mr Gross there will be 10 classes judged at the show.

"The main one will be the champion vealer or yearling with a total prize value of $1300," he said.

The competing cattle must be delivered to the Warwick Saleyards by 3pm on Thursday and will be weighed at 6am on Friday before they are transported to the Warwick Showgrounds.

The cattle weights will determine what class they will compete in and from there it will be judged on several qualities including finish and weight for age.

Judging will commence at 9am and the trophy and ribbon presentation will take place at 2.30pm on Friday.

Well-known cattleman from Tenterfield Keith Wilcox will judge the competition again this year.
