Apple and Grape Festival

Festival is sure to bear fruit

PACK the car, grab your family and take advantage of Stanthorpe's Apple and Grape Harvest Festival this weekend.

Apple and Grape only happens once every two years, and will be running over three big days and three big nights from tomorrow until Sunday.

Festival secretary Jenny O'Connor said preparations for Apple and Grape were progressing well.

"(It's) too late (for nerves). It's happening now. Everything is good and happening," Ms O'Connor said.

"Entries are coming in for the grand parade and the Mount Marley fun run.

"We've got a good variety of food and entertainment, and some great wineries in Weerona Park on Saturday and Sunday.

Ms O'Connor said this year's ambassadors would be announced at the Rio Carnival-themed gala ball.

"There are always a few tickets available for the ball. The online sales finish at 5pm (today).

"You can still get your ball ticket from the shop front on Maryland St on Friday."

Expect to see old favourites such as the apple peel and celebrity grape crush, as well as new attractions like the quilting exhibition at the festival.

Ms O'Connor hopes that the influx of people from the festival will add a nice boost to the local economy.

"Because it's a free event it's very hard to say how many people will roll into town," she said.

"Hopefully businesses in the area will benefit, hopefully people will come back. This is just a sample of what the Granite Belt has to offer."

Rain, hail or shine the festival will be going ahead, Ms O'Connor said.

"It was raining in 2010 and everything still (went) ahead as is. The parade would only be cancelled if it was a safety issue to the public and the float participants," she said.

"But we don't think about the weather. It's going to be great."

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Dean Narramore said the outlook for the weekend was bright.

"It will be mostly fine with a chance of showers on Saturday and Sunday," Mr Narramore said.

"Expect a high of between 26 and 28 degrees."
