Bad weather delays pool opening

MAJOR structural cracks in Killarney's swimming pool have delayed its opening this year.

Engineering director Tony Minuti told council at last week's Community Services committee meeting that recent heavy rain had hindered repair work.

He said the pool had been water-blasted back to the original concrete but ground movement had led to major structural cracks.

It would not now be fixed until weather conditions improved and therefore, he said, it looked set to stay closed well into “the foreseeable future”.

The pool was seriously damaged in the 2008 floods and had struggled to remain open since.

It was leased by Killarney Amateur Swim Club, which formed an important part of the local sporting community and last month was given $600, via a council grant.

Meanwhile, outdoor pools in Allora and Stanthorpe had also been suffering because of the wet weather.

Mr Minuti said some days, no swimmers were able to use the pool.

Staff were therefore forced to close for some periods during the day.
