UPDATE 7.39PM: A 29-year-old man who escaped from Maroochydore Court earlier today has used a tree to get down from the roof of a multi-storey building where he had climbed to evade police.

It's understood after climbing down from the tree the man began running across a courtyard in an effort to get away.

The Department of Justice has confirmed the man was facing mutliple stealing, driving and drug charges.

The incident follows on from a similar courtroom escape, also at Maroochydore, in April 16 this year.

A police media spokesman said the 29-year-old man escaped custody in the courthouse today and had since been located at an address in First Avenue, Mooloolaba.

He said police were still currently negotiating with the man who refused to come down from the roof of an apartment block.
