Increase in firearms offences

STANTHORPE police are gearing up for an increase in firearms offences over and beyond the Easter weekend as the deer rutting season begins.

Officer in charge of the Stanthorpe station Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland said local police and special stock squad police were increasing patrols across the Southern Downs.

"On Friday the stock squad passed through, Snr Sgt Ireland said.

"We're continuing our rural patrols out to Texas and Glen Lyon Dam for rural offences. It's a lead-up to peak period.

"It's something we do but we try to step up the patrols where we can.

"There's no doubt over Easter and after Easter we're expecting an increase of firearm-related offences."

Although no offences have been discovered yet, Snr Sgt Ireland said police were receiving regular complaints from farmers concerned with illegal hunting in their area.

Illegal hunting activities should be reported to Stanthorpe police on 4681 6400.
