Police hunt man over brutal CBD stabbing

TERRIFYING vision of the aftermath of a brutal stabbing in Melbourne's CBD has emerged as police continue to hunt the offender.

A 33-year-old Reservoir man remains in a serious condition in hospital after he and his female friend were attacked on the corner of Elizabeth and Flinders St on Monday morning.

The 37-year-old Reservoir woman is in a stable condition.

Police allege the pair were approached by a man outside 7/Eleven about 4.20am when an physical altercation broke out over a mobile phone.

The man and woman were both stabbed repeatedly in the stomach and lower back.

The man suffered life-threatening injuries and both victims required emergency surgery.

Four people were arrested shortly after the violent assault but have since been released and police say they are being treated as witnesses.

The alleged offender is perceived to be caucasian in appearance and 178cm tall with a medium build.

He was wearing a grey hoodie, grey baggy pants and sneakers, and was carrying a backpack and duffel bag.

Melbourne Crime Investigation Unit detectives have released CCTV footage and are hoping to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has further information.
