Chicken survives six days trapped in disused well

A 'SUPER' chicken has proven to be a survivor after spending at least six days trapped in a disused well.

The bird, named Spocky, can thank carer David Reeve and his decision to do some weeding for her amazing survival story.

Spocky hadn't been seen since Christmas eve and after six days it was assumed she had been taken by a fox or came to grief in some other way.

It was Mr Reeve's unplanned decision to remove a weed that led to her discovery.

Mr Reeve spotted a weed and while pulling it out he stumbled upon a small, disused well, the lid hidden under some grass behind the main water tank.

When he went to put the lid back into place he was pleased to find his "amazing, super" chicken in great shape, if perhaps a little lonely.

"There was the chook, still alive about one metre underground in the well," he said.

"I fished her out and she had a bit of a feed and drink and within half an hour she was out with the other chooks in the paddock.

"We never heard a peep out of her while she was down the well.

"It is a great survival story for anybody, human or animal."

Mr Reeve said smaller birds like chickens need to drink constantly or they will perish. He said fortunately there was a trickle of water in the well but Spocky had still done well to survive.

"I think we'll have to rename her Super Spocky," he said.

"She was very lucky to end up in a hole with water in it."

When the bird's owners named her after Star Trek's Doctor Spock, little did they know she would have her own black hole adventure.
