Planned burns for state forest
IF you see smoke billowing from the Broadwater area on Sunday, don't be alarmed.
The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) will conduct a planned burn within the Broadwater State Forest area on Sunday, weather permitting.
"The burn is part of the annual hazard reduction and conservation management program for parks and forests,” a Department of Environment and Science spokeswoman said.
"As a result, smoke may be seen in the Stanthorpe area.
"The aim of this burn is to reduce the volume of forest fuels and to create a mosaic pattern of burnt and unburnt areas.
"This will help reduce the intensity of any subsequent wildfires, and provide favourable conditions for natural forest regeneration.
"Smoke can decrease visibility on the roads. While forecast winds should take smoke away from populated areas, it may settle overnight so it is important that motorists drive to the conditions,” the spokeswoman said.
