POSTCODE DRAMA: Petition for P4306 change for Blackbutt

WRONG CHOICE: Wendy de Graaf and Simone Karandrews, of Karana Downs, would like to see a new postcode created.

FOR years the postcode 4306 has been a nuisance for people living in Blackbutt and Ipswich.

Now there is another push to get it changed.

The postcode takes in 50 suburbs and is in six different council areas from Ipswich to Blackbutt.

Karana Downs resident Simone Karandrews started the petition, which will expire on June 7.

The petition states residents who share the same postcode can live up to 130km away from each other and the postcode.

"This shared postcode impacts residents' access to government services, including social services and providers, insurance, financing and the many other circumstances that warrant a geographically suitable postcode," she said.

Mrs Karandrews said she had been rejected for a bank loan because of her postcode being classified as rural.

"So that's a major issue for myself," she said.

"I'd like to see Australia Post generate postcodes that are geographically appropriate."

The size and layout of the postcode has an effect on insurance, service providers and mail delivery and creates many other issues for Blackbutt.

Blackbutt's Jeff Connor signed the petition and said being in the postcode impacted his business, Blackbutt Medical Centre, and his insurance.

"When we talk to a specialist and they think 4306 is local, they make an appointment for the patient at 9am and some patients may have subsidised transport and can only get here at 11am," he said.

"Because we don't live at Ipswich, we are two hours down the road."

Mr Connor said the postcode also had an effect on insurance prices.

"We're considered a floodplain area and the day Blackbutt floods will be a sad day for Queensland," he said.

Mr Connor said the solution for Blackbutt would be to move into a South Burnett postcode of 4164 or 4165.

Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington said the postcode had been a serious concern for Blackbutt for many years.

"It's a massive issue for the people that are affected and it needs to change," she said.

According to Australia Post the four-digit system was introduced in 1967.

The decision to change a postcode is based on operational efficiency and factors include configuration of the mail network, transportation connections and delivery arrangements.

An Australia Post spokesman said it is up to Australia Post's discretion to change, retire or introduce postcodes. All postcodes are owned by Australia Post.

"Australia Post has reviewed the postcode 4306 multiple times in the past decade, most recently in 2016," he said.    "Postcodes are assigned purely to facilitate the efficient and effective processing and delivery of mail.

"Postcode changes require significant adjustments to systems and processes, and therefore are only made when there is an operational efficiency to be gained in rerouting mail.

"The use of postcodes by other parties and service providers for their own purposes does not influence Australia Post's operational decisions regarding postcode allocation."
