Blundell extends his lead

DEPUTY Mayor Peter Blundell has increased his lead in the Southern Downs mayoral race, remaining all but assured of victory.

After further vote counting yesterday Cr Blundell's share had shot up to 5366, more than 2780 votes ahead of his nearest rival Mally McMurtrie.

Cr Blundell is yet to formally declare victory, with the poll results to be officially declared next Tuesday.

Around 1200 more postal votes came in yesterday, bringing the total so far returned to close to 18,000, out of more than 23,000 issued.

More postal votes are expected today, with informal votes running at just over two per cent.

On the councillor front Ross Bartley's lead on the top eight could be under threat from Jo McNally, who trails him by just 20 votes. Ninth-placed contender John Randall is still a long way from the eight, 688 votes south of eighth-spot holder Glyn Rees.
