Paywave use lands fine for buying drinks, smokes

AFTER 15 years handling money in the retail industry, one untrustworthy moment landed Rebecca Danelle Cherrie in Rockhampton Magistrates Court.

Cherrie pleaded guilty to four counts of fraud on Friday after using Paywave technology on a stolen bank card to purchase food, drinks and cigarettes.

Police prosecutor Clancy Fox said Cherrie purchased the items on April 19, about half an hour after the card was last used lawfully by the owner's friend.

The court heard Cherrie had been given the card by her friend and believed she was the owner, despite her friend not knowing the PIN number and the different name on the card.

Cherrie then used the Paywave facility on the card to purchase a McFlurry at McDonald's, alcohol at BWS, soft drink at Big W and cigarettes from a Frenchville food store.

In total, Cherrie spent $122.80.

Defence solicitor Brain McGowran said Cherrie had been honest with police about the identity of the friend who allegedly stole the card.

Mr McGowran said Cherrie had worked in retail for 15 years and had been trusted with money.

He said this was her first untrustworthy action in that time.

Magistrate Cameron Press described it as a "foolish and stupid" thing to do and said he hoped Cherrie's first appearance would also be her last.

Cherrie was fined $200 for each offence, totally $800, and payment of $122.80 restitution.

No convictions were recorded.
