Patience call for highway roadwork

AS THE Queensland Government rolls out a record number of roadworks on the Bruce Hwy, a new campaign has been launched to get drivers to show patience.

Premier Campbell Newman and Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson launched the Spruce the Bruce campaign to highlight the almost 200 projects under way or due to start in the coming months on this vital arterial highway.

"The Bruce Hwy is a 1700km lifeline for this state and if we want families and all drivers to be able to travel safely on it, we are going to need a record roadworks program," Mr Newman said.

"I'm asking all Queenslanders - whether you are driving children to school, visiting as a tourist or hauling food and freight - to show some patience with the delays while we get on with this crucial program."

The program starts today.

Mr Emerson said that without the work and adequate funding, the RACQ predicted 300 to 400 people would die in crashes on the Bruce Hwy in the next 10 years.

Nambour-based Senator James McGrath also has voiced his support for the initiative.

"The Bruce Hwy remains the most vital roadway for linking all of Queensland and it's important that it is continually monitored and upgraded to ensure it services the state efficiently and safely," Sen McGrath said.

"The scores of highway works projects will benefit the entire state as a whole over time as travel is made safer, more eff-icient and more resilient to flooding and the rel-ated delays," Sen McGrath said.
