Palmer wants to convert Gold Coast course into high-rises
BILLIONAIRE MP Clive Palmer has re-opened debate on coping with Gold Coast population growth by lodging two development applications to turn golf course land into high-rise development.
Mr Palmer, the federal member for Fairfax, wants Gold Coast City Council to vary its planning scheme to let him use land at Robina that he owns and runs as an 18-hole golf course to be transformed into several 30-storey high towers.

He wants this development to happen on low-lying land near Mudgereeba Creek, which is identified as one of the Gold Coast's flood plains.
Yet Gold Coast City Council's Green Heart plan shows it as "regionally important" for conservation and recreation.
Two parcels of land - the Palmer Colonial Golf Course at Robina and the adjacent Avica Resort land on Gooding Drive - are to be transformed into a compact, high-density residential development.
