Pacific women at high risk of violence: report

WOMEN aged 15-44 in Pacific nations are more at risk of rape and domestic violence than cancer, car accidents, malaria and war, says a new report.

An Oxfam Australia study with a major focus on Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands found the rate of violence against women was one of the highest in the world.

The not-for-profit group used the figures to urge the Australian Government to commit more money to gender equality.

"Since coming to office the Coalition government has cut more than $11.3 billion from current and future aid," Oxfam chief Dr Helen Szoke said.

"The violence against women and girls throughout the Pacific, in countries such as the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Vanuatu, is at horrifying levels."
