Owner, car reunited, 21 years later

'IF you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it was meant to be.'

That saying certainly rings true for Jimboomba resident, Alex Kuiper.

Not only did he build his 1988 Datsun Bluebird Convertible virtually from scratch, but he sold it then bought it back, 21 years later.

Unbelievable, but true.

"In 1984 I had a dream to make a bluebird convertible. So I did," Alex said. "I bought an old taxi shell and converted and built it.

"I spent many hours on it and finished it on my wedding day in April 1988. Two weeks later I took it out for a spin and I ended up having a head on smash on the way back home. It had only done 100km."

After having it repaired, Alex decided it was time to part with his beloved Bluebird.

"I wasn't happy with the repair job so took it to a friend's wrecking yard and left it in the show room. It was sold," he said.

"Sixteen-years later it was found left under a tree with the roof off. It sat there, under that tree, for about five years. I decided to buy it back."

Unfortunately, the maroon and white convertible had been corroded by rust. Luckily, Alex had a plan.

"About four years after I originally sold the Bluebird I started gathering parts to make another one," he said.

"I managed to import coupe doors and half the rear of a Japanese car. I used these bits and pieces to rebuild the rusted Bluebird and in February 2010 I got the newly refurbished car registered.

"My wife came home from work to see it registered and I announced, here is your wedding present, I am sorry it is 22 years late‟.

Alex says the process taught him a lot about patience.

"It pays to never give up!" he said.
