Oval needs lighting
STANTHORPE's sporting groups are calling on the council for help to find a solution to the lighting issue at CF White Oval.
The lights were pulled down last month and since then, both Carlton and Stanthorpe City Football Clubs have been unable to use the oval for training.
This has put extra burden on Crisp Oval, used by the Stanthorpe junior rugby league clubs.
Stanthorpe Sports Association sports co-ordinator Michael Jensen said the junior league needed Crisp Oval in top shape for the Mustangs Challenge next month.
"Junior league has been happy for City and Carlton to use that facility but we've got concerns with long-term use up there," Mr Jensen said.
"We've got a major carnival up there in May and we want to make sure the fields are in a good state.
"We're obviously not going to throw football off in the meantime, but all clubs have submitted letters of support for interim lighting."
The installation of a temporary lighting solution for 20 weeks has been quoted at $16,500.
But Mr Jensen said that wasn't something the clubs or sports association could afford.
"We obviously need something as an interim measure until funding can be secured for permanent lighting, because the State election has just finished and the budget had been pushed back," he said. "They're not offering any funding at the moment and I can't see them doing that any time soon.
"We're sort of stuck between a rock and hard place, so we wrote to council to see if they were able to come up with a solution."
The request went before council on Tuesday, with councillors agreeing more information was needed before a final decision could be made, including the feasibility of temporary lighting.
The matter will now go before next week's general council meeting.
