Outgoing mayor supports forum
IF THE would-be 2012 Southern Downs Regional councillors who braved a grilling in Stanthorpe Civic Centre last night survived, they'll be facing the public all over again tonight.
With 22 councillor and eight mayoral candidates confirmed to run in the April 28 local government election, it's truly a Melbourne Cup field of nominations.
Even though we've interviewed and met most candidates, picking the best of the bunch is no mean feat.
That's why tonight the Daily News, in partnership with the Warwick Chamber of Commerce, will host a Meet the Candidates forum in the Kings Theatre at the Warwick RSL.
Come along and meet the potential leaders of our community in person and see how they stand up to questioning by the Daily News and Warwick Chamber president David Littleproud.
Mr Littleproud said he was pleased to be involved in organising such an important public event.
"This forum will be a great opportunity for both mayoral and councillor candidates to clearly outline their vision for the Southern Downs and what part they see council will play in achieving that vision," Mr Littleproud said.
"It also is an opportunity to reflect on the current council's performance over the last term and identify the areas of deficiency and how they intend to address those deficiencies in the new council term.
"The Chamber wanted to help establish this forum not only for our members, but also for the broader community as result of this election will shape the future of the Southern Downs for years to come."
With postal ballots soon hitting letterboxes across the region, a man with plenty of election experience is retiring mayor Ron Bellingham, who said community forums like this were "the most valuable opportunity for prospective candidates to put their view across".
Email questions for the candidates to firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 4660 1318 before noon today. Questions will not be accepted from the floor on the night.
