OPINION: Stress less with a new hobby
MY husband is forever telling me I work too much and I carry around too much stress. He continually tells me I need a new hobby.
Well I guess he got sick of telling me with no response, so I came home from work a few months ago and he had built me 6 new raised bed gardens and a little hot house.
I do love to garden and when I have spare time I love to get 'back to nature' in one form or another, but I felt this was some form of punishment for me and not a way to work out my stress levels.
Guess what? I was wrong (I know those words will haunt me this week). Not only am a feeling a little less stressed, but when the product recall of frozen vegetables was made public last week, I knew I didn't have to worry. You see if I'm not growing it, I am most certainly purchasing as much as humanly possible locally.
How lucky are we to live in a region, where our primary producers take the safety of their product and of their consumers so seriously?
Every safety measure is taken to make sure that what is grown in this region is of a world class standard and from a very local level the choices of fresh fruit and vegetables that are grown in this region, in every season, are overwhelming.
Now, don't get me wrong. I know the convenience of grabbing a bag of frozen vegetables out of the freezer when you have just finished a long day at work, but at what cost?
Our forefathers would be horrified to see how simple and still so complicated our diets had become. The nutrients we aren't getting any more is really scary. In an attempt to make our lives 'easier', we have actually become our bodies own worst enemy.
So next time you do our weekly shop, make sure you spend a big chunk of your time checking out the fresh fruit and veggies on offer from your own doorstep. Your body, your wallet and your farmers will thank you.
And if you really want to try something a little different, plant your own garden. I guarantee you that you will get a great sense of satisfaction in eating something that you have grown yourself... and your stress levels will fade away...(this is where I am supposed to thank my husband).
