Onto semis after Dalby win

Rugby League: The Stanthorpe Gremlins are finals bound in their first year in the Toowoomba Rugby League Clive Berghofer 2nd division competition after a convincing 22-6 win over the Dalby Diehards on Saturday at Sullivan Oval. The result pleased captain-coach Gary Skimmings given, just seven days prior at Dalby, the result had been reversed with the Diehards emerging 22-16 in a closely-fought tussle between the two top five clubs.

The draw pitched the Diehards and Gremlins against each other for the final two fixture rounds and now they'll face off again on Sunday in the first finals round at Glenholme Park junior oval, Toowoomba, from 10am.

The hot topic at Gremlins' training this week was ball security with Skimmings concerned about the high incidence of dropped ball against Dalby. Defence was the key to success for the Stanthorpe side on Saturday - "our best defensive effort of the season”, Skimmings said.

Hooker Hamish Cole put the Gremlins on the scoreboard in the third minute of play with a try, followed by two further four-pointers by Regan Sullivan and Lachlan Swan. The home side led 14-0 at the 20-minute mark before Dalby registered its first points.

After the Gremlins took a 14-6 advantage into half time, they held the Diehards scoreless in the second stanza but increased their own total with tries by Zach Hendry and another for Hamish Cole.

Skimmings will field his top line-up going in to the final, more than happy to say the team has no injury concerns.

Sunday's game is a knock-out semi-final, so a Gremlins win is vital. A supporters bus is being put on by Crisps for parents and fans and will leave at 7am Sunday morning from opposite the Top Pub.
