One-goal gives City the title

FOOTBALL: After a 15 game season the men's minor premiership was decided by a solitary goal.

Stanthorpe United and Stanthorpe City both finished with 33 points, but City nicked the title thanks to one goal in their favour in the for and against stats.

Things swung in City's favour on Saturday after they narrowly got up over Carlton.

Josh Rogers put City ahead from a free-kick.

The Bears pulled one back from the penalty spot.

City captain Ben Staley stepped up with minutes left to bang a free-kick into the top right to secure a win for his side.

On Sunday, United knew nothing but all three points against Ballandean would secure them the title.

In an end to end, frenetic game, neither side had many shots on goal.

Most of the play was concentrated in the middle of the park with both back lines up to scratch on the day.

Ballandean gave United keeper Josh Crestani little to do, but the same could be said for the other end.

United had a few opportunities from set pieces but couldn't get the decisive touch.

Their best chance fell in the last five minutes when a free-kick was swung in, narrowly missing the all important touch from any of the advancing United players.

In the end, points were shared, handing the title to City.

In the remaining men's tie Inter Club secured their finals place with a comfortable win over Tenterfield.

City registered a 2-nil win in junior colts.

Tenterfield bested Inter Club 4-nil and United's junior colts were far too good for Ballandean in a 7-nil win.

It was the opposite story in senior colts as Ballandean managed to grab a 2-nil win while City fell to a 1-nil loss to Carlton.

The upset win secured Carlton's spot in the semi-finals.

Vying for the Brendan Sweetman Memorial Shield, Inter Club secured the trophy with a win over their hosts at Federation Park.

Goals to Bek Stibbard and Lani Smith gave City the spoils over Carlton, while United couldn't bring an end to Ballandean's unbeaten run as the visitors came out 2-nil victors.

Despite sitting bottom of the ladder going into to Saturday's game, with Carlton losing, Tenterfield could jump to fourth with a win over Inter Club.

They were in the drivers seat from the outset with Murraya Horan, Allana Clancy and Tatyana Cook all hitting the net to put them 3-nil up.

With their season on the line, Inter rallied and managed to pull a goal back, but Tenterfield's defence stayed solid and secured the win and a semi-final spot.
