Busy time for maternity with 10 babies born
IT has been a record-breaking 30 hours at Gladstone Hospital's maternity department.
Ten new babies were born in that time, on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Maternity nurse unit manager Lisa Blacker said never before had so many babies been born in such a short space of time.
"Seven in two days was our previous record, but 10 in 30 hours is unheard of here," she said.
"Normally we handle about 45 new babies each month. That's about one, sometimes two a day."
Extra staff had to be called in to cope with the onslaught this week, she said.
"We had people working through their meals breaks, but we coped with them all.
"We were able to house them all. There were no issues."
She said staff were hoping for a more restful day today.
