Officer supports boot camp idea
CALLS for organisations and landholders to provide facilities for youth boot camp trials in the north of the state have sparked an interest with local police.
Stanthorpe Police officer in charge Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland said the idea of early intervention boot camps was a good one.
"I certainly think the idea has merit," Snr Sgt Ireland said.
"My personal opinion is that the boot camp needs to be well disciplined though.
"The kids need to be made to do things they don't want to do and there needs to be some serious consequences if they don't cooperate."
Snr Sgt Ireland said no Stanthorpe youths had been ordered to attend an early intervention boot camp yet.
"They should be everywhere but there are areas with more serious youth problems than us," he said.
The program aims to challenge attitudes and behaviours, enhance physical health and identify individual and family issues.
Early intervention boot camps are currently being trialled on the Gold Coast, the Fraser Coast/Sunshine Coast and at Rockhampton, with plans for two more to be established in Townsville and Cairns.
