OPINION: Nothing very social about social media

OPINION: I often wonder what idiots used to do prior to the advent of social media.

If ever there was a misnomer then social media is it.

It is far from social and has become a playground for those who like to make nasty, irrelevant comments while hiding behind the anonymity of their computers.

My mother was fond of saying (as indeed many mothers were) that if you had nothing nice to say then say nothing.

If you don't like what is written, don't read it. If you don't like a television program, change the channel or turn it off altogether.

You and you alone are responsible for what you read, watch or do.

To take to social media to vent your anger at someone or something is pointless.

It is clear the intentions of sites such as Facebook and Twitter were meant as a way of faster communication and being able to keep in touch with friends.

The fact this admirable goal has been high-jacked by a small-minded minority is indeed a sad indication of the path many have taken.

As a general rule of thumb, if you wouldn't say something to a person's face then why would you say it on social media?

If you feel really compelled to then at least have the courage to sign your name to it.

But then it might make you liable for what you have said, mightn't it?
