New urban remake of Annie features a 'mean' Cameron Diaz

THE latest incarnation of Annie is set to introduce the musical to a new generation.

Annie's trademark red curls are gone, with Quvenzhane Wallis putting a new twist on the young orphan.

Jamie Foxx also puts a new spin on "Daddy" Warbucks, who has been reimagined as a business tycoon who adopts orphan Annie in a bid to help his campaign to become mayor.

The modern retelling is set in New York City, with Annie living with Miss Hannigan in Harlem.

Wallis, who was nominated for an Oscar for her first-ever acting role in the film Beasts of the Southern Wild, sings and dances in the film opposite her evil foster mum (Cameron Diaz) and Aussie Rose Byrne, who plays Foxx's assistant.

The film is due for release in the US on December 19. An Australian release date has yet to be announced.
