New Little Athletics team proving their worth
Little Athletics: Let it be known, the Granite Belt Little Athletics are the new team to beat in the Darling Downs region.
Addison McCosker (under-11) and Maggie (under-9), Erin (under-11) and Brigid O'Dea (under-13) were four of the athletes who competed at the regional championships in Highfields, with the O'Dea sisters qualifying for state.
It's the first time the newly established club has competed in the event, so nerves were high.
"It was fun but the competition was tough,” Addison said. "It was a good experience to go.”
"It was really hard to compete against other people you don't know,” Erin added.
Addison placed fourth in the 60m hurdles, sixth in the 100m sprint and eighth in the 400m sprint; Maggie placed third in the 800m sprint and fourth in the 400m sprint; Erin placed third in 800m sprint and Brigid placed first in the 1500m sprint, third in the 1500m race walk and third in the 800m sprint.
What satisfied the girls most was knowing they were making a name for themselves.
"It felt good because Brigid got first in one of her events and those girls have been doing it for a lot longer than us and she still got the highest score,” Erin said.
The O'Dea girls won't be headed to Townsville this year to compete in the State Championships due to travel distance. Instead, they'll put their energy into training and hoping for a place in the State Championships in 2020, which will be held in Brisbane.
For now, the girls are looking forward to upcoming cross-country events in which they can use their sprinting abilities learned from Little Athletics.
