New labelling follows frozen berry debacle

A NEW food labelling system requiring the percentage of Australian content to be listed has been announced by Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce.

Green and gold kangaroo labels will have four categories of content and say whether a product has been made in Australia.

The new labelling system follows widespread consumer outrage after an outbreak of hepatitis A caused by frozen berries imported from China earlier this year.

Mr Abbott said the labelling would give consumers more choice and he hoped it would begin on a voluntary basis before the end of the year and be law by next year.

"This is something the Australian public have wanted for a long time," he said.
