HAS Subaru intercepted paint tins on their way to Volvo for its Polestar editions?
Not quite, but the luscious blue hue seen on these WRXs, STIs and BRZs does look very similar to the special edition Swedes, which is no bad thing considering the popularity of the eye-catching colour.
Subaru calls its shade Hyper Blue, and it's been announced that 300 cars destined for Australia will be produced in the colour across three special edition sports variants.
There will be 200 WRX Premiums with CVT transmissions coming in Hyper Blue, 50 manual WRX STI Premiums and 50 BRZs, all on sale from October 1.
Subaru Australia managing director Nick Senior said he expected the Hyper Blue cars to attract plenty of attention.
"We feel that like many other of our special edition colours in the past, these vehicles will be keenly sought after in the years to come.
"There's always massive interest in our sports special edition versions. Combine that with their proven track record of excellent retained value, and you have every reason to get the blues."
Cheesy line aside, Subaru is on a bit of a roll with its current WRX and WRX STI sales, up 7.7 per cent year-to-date to the end of July. Shifting 1936 examples in that time, it said that was on a par with the late 1990s heyday of the Mark 1 originals.
There is no word on what premium (if any) the Hyper Blue editions will have, with prices and specification being announced to coincide with the on-sale date.
