Netball season just around the corner
NETBALL: Outdoor netball season is kicking off this Saturday with a grading day for this year's players.
From 9.30am players born from 2009 to 2013 can try out for the under-11s teams, while anyone born in 2008 or earlier can try out for over-12s.
It's the first year the Stanthorpe Netball Association Inc has taken part in the NetSetGo junior netball competition for children aged five to 10.
A Stanthorpe Netball spokeswoman said the program got girls involved with netball from a young age.
"It's to encourage all the girls and boys up to 12,” she said.
"But we're encouraging even girls over 11 who've never played before.
"There's no cap on age so we're encouraging women to join the competition as well.”
She said over the past few years netball in Stanthorpe had drastically grown.
"We're just starting to gain momentum for the club,” she said.
"Our numbers are building and each year our competition is getting stronger.”
The spokeswoman said all of the games were played within Stanthorpe, meaning parents wouldn't have to travel far every week.
"Last season our older players thoroughly enjoyed playing in a full match competition with four established teams,” she said.
"This year we are hoping to expand the number of teams in this competition.”
She said netball was a great sport to be involved in as many of the girls played for life.
"We have a strong competition with women in Stanthorpe,” she said.
"For a girl to play netball, it sets them up with a sport for life.
"It's learning how to play a team sport and learning good sportsmanship and staying fit.
"It's so important for kids to play with their peers and their friends.”
Anyone is welcome to attend the grading day, however anyone interested in signing up needs to register.
