Mum’s gross find in Woolies baby food

Woolworths has launched an investigation after a shocked mother found gross foreign objects inside a packet of baby food she had purchased.

An irate mother from QLD posted to Woolworths' Facebook page pictures of a nasty surprise she found inside a packet of the grocer's own-brand Smiling Tums baby food for six months and older - apple and banana with oats flavour.

Pictures she posted depict a black, rubbery substance that contains both long and tiny pieces inside the packet.

The mother captioned her post, "Seriously? Just opened one of my son's packages (and) it's full of some rubbery plastic c**p. Called the Woolworths I (bought) it from and I was literally offered a REPLACEMENT. Why would I want a replacement of this c**p?"

A spokesman for Woolworths said the supplier of the baby food rigorously tested products and that this incident was "rare" but was being treated seriously.

"We treat food safety very seriously and have moved quickly to assess this customer's report with our baby food pouch supplier," Woolworths told NCA NewsWire in a statement.

"Our supplier operates to the highest food safety standards and is equipped with magnets, metal detectors and screens to detect any foreign objects.

"Given all of these food safety controls, issues such as this are incredibly rare and we'll work with our supplier to establish how it could have happened once the product is returned."

The mother has been offered a refund and a voucher. Woolworths confirmed they had not received any other complaints of a similar nature for the own-brand Smiling Tums range.

"It appears to be an isolated incident, as we're unaware of any other reports of a similar nature on this product at this time," a spokesman said.

"We've apologised to the customer and will offer a refund on the product as well as a voucher in recognition of the poor experience."
