Dawson MP wants to see Mackay aligned as a FIFO hub

DESPITE tenders closing six months ago, there has been no word yet on who will build the Carmichael coal mine airport.

But Federal Member for Dawson George Chirstensen said he hoped North Queensland Airports, who own Mackay's airport, would be awarded the job.

He said this would help align Mackay as a FIFO hub, which would be critical in getting Mackay workers jobs at the mine.

"I would dearly love to see (it awarded to) North Queensland Airports," Mr Christensen said.

"That would really align Mackay with Carmichael.

"But regardless of who gets the work I hope synergies can be found with the Mackay airport."

Tenders for the work opened in June and closed in December 2014.

An Adani spokesperson said a decision on a preferred contractor would be due in the coming months.

"Importantly, all firms that have tendered for the work have a significant presence in Central Queensland," he said.

Mackay Airport general manager Rob Porter did not comment on whether they had applied for the contract, but said Mackay was 'best placed' for FIFO.

"Mackay Airport ...will work with all relevant parties to ensure we meet the demand for aviation access generated by new resource developments in our region," Mr Porter said

"The demand for air services can be expected to grow strongly as developments in the Galilee Basin progress and Mackay is best placed to service these as well as the existing and any new operations in the Bowen Basin."

Mr Christensen also said Mackay should be aligning itself as the place to draw mining sector capabilities from..

"We need to show them we have the labour pool to draw on and we do," Mr Christensen said.

"We've got runs on the board. We have the experience, it's as simple as that.

"We have been the mining service (industry) capital for the Bowen basin."
