Mounting tricky horse challenges
DRESSAGE and campdraft are popular on the Southern Downs, but one group has been participating in a slightly more challenging sport.
The Southern Downs Horse Challenge Horse Club is a group for all ages and skill levels which offers riders the opportunity to practise their horse skills while working cattle.
Club secretary Michelle McLeay said the Challenge Events usually comprised two components, the first a Dry Pattern where riders were judged on how well the horses moved and were trained while the second component of the event was horse and rider working with cattle, similar to a campdraft run.
"The rider enters the camp, cuts a beast out from the herd then holds them on the fence to display how they can control it, then calls for the gates to be open then the rider and horse run the cow around three pegs in a Campdraft pattern.”
Michelle said events like the Stockman's Challenge in Toowoomba were helping their group of around 50 members to continue to grow.
"We often will go to those events together and aside from supporting each other, it's a great social time.”
The group is hosting a Beginners Working with Cattle and Mini Challenge Event on September 22 and 23.
