"My daughter is going to kick your head in"

AN Ipswich woman was cheered on by her mother as she launched a physical assault on a pedestrian who had the misfortune of crossing paths with her.

Brittney Louise Thompson, 19, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm at Ipswich Magistrates Court this week.

The court heard Thompson's mother was driving a car at Booval on September 9 last year when the victim crossed the road in front of them.

The victim apparently crossed the road as the lights for traffic were turning green.

Prosecutor Courtney Boss said insults were exchanged before Thompson's mother stopped the vehicle and told the female victim: "My daughter is going to kick your head in."

Egged on by her mother, Thompson grabbed the victim by the hair and punched her several times across the arms and head.

The victim sustained bruising.

Defence lawyer Vince Knox said while his client did not deny the charges, the mother should take some responsibility for the ugly incident.

"It is horrible that her mother encouraged her," Mr Knox said.

Magistrate Barry Cosgrove agreed, saying that "decent people" don't engage in slanging matches over such a minor inconvenience.

"This was entirely unprovoked so far as you are concerned," Mr Cosgrove told Thompson.

"You are fortunate the victim did not suffer anything more than bruising."

Thompson was sentenced to three months jail, wholly suspended for 18 months. She was also fined $300 for failing to appear in court on an earlier date.
